National Juvenile Academies

National Youth Focus

The Dominica Football Associations’ main area of focus is the establishment of Youth Football Academies throughout the island. The aim is to eventually establish YFA in as many communities as is possible.

We recognize the opportunity sports, and particularly football, offers the youth and the nation. By engaging in the healthy wholesome activity of football the youth are afforded the opportunity to channel their energies in a positive endeavor. The camaraderie experienced in sports reduces the need for gang association, and the violent nature of that life style, drug use is discouraged, self-esteem is enhanced, as well life-time skills are cultivated, among many other benefits.

Academy Structure

Each academy will be situated in communities to facilitate the participants walking to the sessions, community supervision, ownership and participation.

The participants will be categorized in the age groups:

Boys and girls will be encouraged to participate.

Coaches

The Dominica Football Association has trained a number of coaches in collaboration with the IOC and FIFA. The intention is to have a trained coach and assistant for each YFA. The DFA technical director and new coaching instructor Jerome Bardoulle will develop the training programs to be standard across the YFA. Particular emphasis will be placed on proper instruction methods and skill drills and challenges appropriate for the different age categories. Coaches will be instructed to pay strict attention to their code of conduct and varying roles as teachers, facilitator, mentor, etc. The coaches will be made to realize the need to develop and cultivate positive relationships with the youth so as to maintain lines of communication. Equipment

The DFA will make the necessary resources available through collaboration with private sector partnership and through joint efforts with the Dominica Academy of Arts and Sciences and by extension the Diaspora, and the DOC.

Execution Schedule

The sessions will be held three times weekly within the time frame:

The maximum number of athletes per session should be thirty.

Initial Locations

It would be ideal if resources permitted the establishment of academies in all the different communities. Some locations will require facility improvement, particularly the pitch surface and the availability of a structure for change rooms etc. These areas have been targeted for initial start up.
