Adam Sanford Playing for ICB Empire, Barbados

The Dominica-born test pacer, Adam Sanford believes that the road to a recall to the West Indies team goes through Barbados. Sanford, who made his debut for the Windies in the Cable and Wireless series against India – taking 15 wickets in that five test series and another five in the two match series against New Zealand – but left out of the team that now on tour of India, is now playing club cricket in Barbados for division one team ICB Empire.

“Some of the greats have come from here,” the pacer said while talking about why he decided to play in the local league.

But his main reasons for taking up the contract to play, he told the local press, were to regain fitness lost because of a lack of serious activity in Antigua where he resides, and to regain his place on the West Indies team.

“I was rather disappointed (when I was left out of the team for the tour of India), but there is nothing I can do about it. Next time around, I’ve got to work on certain areas of my game and hopefully I’ll get recalled,” he said.

Sanford wasted little time ruffling and shaking up the Bajan batsmen.

After a rather ordinary and fruitless opening spell of five overs that cost him 27 runs, the Dominican pacer returned later to tidy up and take three for 68 off 19 overs against Big B Spartan.

By the second innings he was beginning to find his rhythm and “he generated discomforting bounce that undid Spartan batsmen without much of a fight,” according to one local newspaper report.

He snared all six Spartan wickets for 38 off nine overs, to finish with match figures of nine for 106, creating a buzz around the ground.

“Sanford has surely brought something refreshing to the local club scene,” wrote Nation newspaper reporter Hayden Gill.

Still Sanford admitted that he wasn’t at full strength.

“I am still rusty,” he told the Nation. “There were some aches and pains in the muscles (after the match).
